Ngorongoro Crater

The world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera, home to dense Big Five wildlife.

Discover the untamed majesty of Ngorongoro Crater.

Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater feels like entering a lost, self-contained world. Formed when a massive volcano collapsed two to three million years ago, this 600-meter deep volcanic caldera creates a natural amphitheater spanning 260 square kilometers of lush grasslands, acacia forests, and soda lakes.

The crater floor supports an astounding density of wildlife — over 25,000 large mammals live within its steep walls year-round. It is one of the premier sanctuaries in East Africa for endangered black rhinos, giant tusker elephants, thriving lion prides, and vast flocks of pink flamingos on Lake Magadi.
